Viking chiefs catch up in LA
THE overnight unveiling of the new Viking Cruises expedition cruise product in Los Angeles (see page 1) took place at the Beverly Hilton, which also recently hosted the Golden Globe Awards.
Perhaps not commanding quite as much star power, the Viking event nevertheless featured a performance by famous Norwegian soprano, Sissel Kyrkjebo, who is also the ceremonial godmother to Viking Jupiter, the newest vessel in Viking’s ocean fleet.
The new expedition ships feature so-called “Nordic balconies” which automatically fold down to form an al-fresco viewing area, public spaces which will be familiar to Viking customers such as the Aquavit Terrace and the Nordic Spa & Fitness centre - of course featuring a snow grotto.
Allowing passengers to explore in comfort, Viking has not compromised on the scientific side of expedition cruising, with the ships also featuring a full laboratory and new partnerships in place with key research institutions including a new Cambridge University professorship which is being endowed by Viking.
Kayaks, two submarines, military-grade Zodiacs and other expedition cruisers will provide a full array of experiences for guests, all at no additional cost.
On polar itineraries guests will receive a personal Viking Expedition kit with everything they need to be comfortable including a Viking Expeditions jacket to keep.
