SHANNONS NUMBER PLATE AUCTION TOTALS $2.4M
THIRTY-EIGHT rare and collectible number plates sold for more than $2.4 million with the biggest seller changing hands for $181,000, at the recent Shannons
Motorclassica number plate auction.
The biggest seller on the night was the Victorian number plate 'Q'. This was the first time in a decade that a single-letter Victorian plate had come onto the market.
This was closely followed by the Victorian motorcycle number plate ‘4' at $150,000, which was a record price for a bike plate. A Victorian heritage plate number ‘781' was the biggest seller of the 11 threedigit plates offered on the night, fetching $140,000.
Other attractive number combinations bringing good money were '99.888' selling without reserve for $60,000 against an expectation of $25,000.
Five-digit plates also got big numbers with '18.181' and '11.811' selling with no reserve for $52,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Porsche numbers ‘916' and ‘934' were predictably popular, selling for $108,000 and $102,000, while sequential plates ‘470' and ‘471' brought $112,000 and $107,000.
Birthday plates ‘2019' and ‘1998' went for $57,000 and $58,000.
Shannons National Auctions Manager, Christophe Boribon, was pleased with the overall $2.4 million result and the engagement of the enthusiastic Motorclassica auction crowd.
“Interest in number plates continues to grow nationally and this result is reflective of that. We had a large number of bidders in the room and online and achieved some outstanding results,” he said.
