1964 AUSTIN HEALEY 3000 MKIII

A BEAUT BRITISH ROADSTER JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER

- WORDS MARK HIGGINS

A JOINT venture between Austin and the Donald Healey Motor Company resulted in Austin-Healey, established in 1952.

Built from 1959 to 1967, the 3000 was affectionately known as the big Healey, with the bodywork made by Jensen Motors and assembly taking place at BMC’s Abingdon plant, alongside the MG models of the day.

With the launch of the Mk III 3000 came a power boost from 136bhp to 150bhp. Other changes were the standard fitment of power-assisted brakes, previously an option, and a new dash fascia that had the speedo and tacho in front of the driver.

Delivered new April 29, 1964, to Kenneth Overmire of San Francisco, this Colorado Red, 3000 Mk III has chassis number HBJ8L/25327 showing it to be just the 13th built.

Arriving in Australia in 1988, it was accompanied by its original BMC Passport to Service and has remained with the one owner since its arrival here. It has been comprehensively restored by the Healey Factory resulting in it winning several concours awards including Best Austin Healey 3000 Mk III in 1998 and 2002 plus a class winner and People’s Choice winner at other events. It features chrome wire wheels, brilliant brightwork, and the interior black interior looks inviting. Headrests have been added as has a 15-inch wood rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel. According to the Healey factory the wind up windows, adjustable steering column, one-touch fabric convertible hood with zip out rear window and the original Smiths heater make it a classic you can enjoy year round.

Several upgrades were made during the restoration to improve its driveability, reliability, safety, and roadholding including electronic ignition a hi torque starter motor, the fitting of an alternator, telescopic Koni shocks all round, twin fuel pumps as well as a high mount third brake light.

This 1964 Austin Healey 3000 Mk III is at the Healey Factory with a price tag of $120,000.
