THE BULLITT MUSTANG: IS IT THE REAL ENCHILADA?

THE STAR turn at the Lloyds classic car auction on February 25 turned out to be a VK Blue Meanie Commodore, selling for $121,000. Group A Commodores of various generations attracted the most heated bidding with a rare VN Group A– a low miler – proving the nextgen cars are rising up the collector scale, the hammer falling on this one at $88,000. That was followed quickly by a VL Commodore Group A at a very solid $84,500. Meanwhile a 1972 Torana XU-1 got a top bid of $110,000 and was under negotiation. Torana buyers were spoiled for choice, with six examples on offer, including three SL/R5000s, which scored bids hovering around the $60k mark.

Perhaps the buy of the day was a very tidy-looking 1978 Ford LTD with a 351 in the snout for $12,500 but if you had a bit more disposable income, you could have landed the keys to a Lamborghini Gallardo, the $128k final bid going under negotiation with the vendor. A Valiant 770 which reached $28,500 looked very good buying, and given how old Monaro prices have lifted in recent months, $71,000 for a ‘69 HK 186 coupe didn’t seem an unreasonable ask. Exactly the same sum would have landed you a ‘74 Ford Falcon XB coupe if your allegiance resides on the other side of the fence.
