THE LYALL HOTEL AND SPA, SOUTH YARRA, MELBOURNE

- By Sue Wallace thelyall.com

Whether enjoying a tipple at the Champagne Bar, an alfresco lunch on the terrace or chilling in your chic suite, The Lyall Hotel and Spa combines verve and character. The award-winning bolthole in leafy South Yarra remains Melbourne’s only privately owned and operated five-star hotel since opening in 2002. Named after the French derivative l’isle, The Lyall is a sophisticated “island haven” where you can enjoy a little people watching in the lounge – you never know which well-heeled A-lister has checked in. The hotel boasts 40 one- and two-bedroom suites with an oriental inspired décor: while the glamorous Grand Suites have plush decor, a bathroom spa, living area with balcony and a kitchen. The Platinum Suite is outstanding with two fireplaces and large outdoor terrace.

The hotel’s exclusive Shopping Privilege Card will come in handy at nearby Toorak Road boutiques and restaurant selection is made easier by the owners’ guide to South Yarra dining. Bistro Lyall is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with spa cuisine options but the Lyall Big Breakfast with the lot, has a following. The award-winning spa has eight treatment rooms including two large hammam-style steam rooms – indulge in a treatment and you soon see why guests fly in especially. Service is slick with European charm and no one will blame you if you cosy up in The Lyall and just enjoy all that’s on offer.
