PULLMAN TOKYO TAMACHI, JAPAN

- By Aleney de Winter

The brand new Pullman Tokyo Tamachi is not only the first Pullman to open in Japan but the AccorHotel Group’s 1000th hotel in Asia Pacific, and it is a genuine stunner. The plush hotel, like Tokyo itself, cleverly combines the modern with the traditional, and from the moment we enter its bold Japanese kabuki-inspired lobby, we’re swept into a sanctuary of five-star luxury. Located just two-minutes by covered walkway from Tamachi Station and MSB Tamachi – a 30-storey shopping, dining and office complex in one of Tokyo’s up-and-coming business districts – the 143-room hotel offers quick access from Haneda Airport. Thoughtfully designed spaces feature throughout with an indoor/outdoor rooftop bar area and a spacious lounge and work space in the lobby.

A collection of incredible modern artworks splash their way wildly across walls and ceilings, and an open-air rooftop garden allows you to listen and watch as the Shinkansen snake their speedy way along the train lines below. We loved the enormous timber ping pong table secreted in a quiet corner of the lobby, adjacent the Junction Bar. The non-smoking hotel has 143 contemporary guest rooms, including connecting and family rooms. Our beautifully appointed Deluxe Room is very spacious by Tokyo standards and features incredible artworks, a stylish lounge area, jaw dropping bathroom with free-standing tub, rain shower and a toilet that could launch the space shuttle.

Dining is superb with a meal at laid-back and lovely KASA a highlight. Yuzu cured Mt Fuji trout with nori powder, teppan grilled snapper with edamame salad and beautifully marbled Japanese beef ribs are among the sigh-inducing highlights of a menu that cleverly fuses Mediterranean style cooking with local ingredients and flavours. For more casual dining the Platform 9 rooftop bar serves Japanese-style tapas which can be enjoyed along with a menu of fine cocktails and sweeping views of the Tokyo skyline.

Prices start from 20900 JPY (about A$262) per room, per night. pullmanhotels.com
