10 FAVOURITE THINGS
Australian fashion designer Kym Ellery on the things that bring her joy
1. VINTAGE YASHICA CAMERA After fashion, photography is my second love. This camera is so much fun to experiment with — you never know what will come out when the film goes off to be processed. 2. LES PAUL GUITAR When I moved to Paris last year, one of the first things I decided to do was learn guitar. I found this vintage Les Paul custom electric guitar from the 1980s and fell in love with it immediately. 3. AKILA BERJAOUI Akila is an incredibly talented art photographer and I’m lucky enough to also call her one of my best friends. When I look at this picture I feel transported to the beach; I can almost smell the salty ocean and feel the hot sand. It’s the perfect thing to wake up to each morning. 4. MUSIC I collect vinyl and one of my treasured records is Journey in Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane. 5. MUM’S HANDMADE CERAMICS My mother, Debra, is a ceramic artist and she has made me some amazing pieces over the years, some of which I have throughout my home. I especially admire the textured glazes she uses and the beautiful rustic finishes that she achieves from using a variety of firing techniques. 6. JEWELLERY I like these statement earrings from the Ellery Pre-fall 2017 collection. The solid brass body has soft chain tassels that hang from within it and is designed to be worn asymmetrically. 7. SONATA BOOTS These Ellery shoes with a metal ring detail at the front are my everyday go-to boots. I can’t leave home without them. 8. ROBIN DAY We have just opened our new flagship store in Sydney at Fiveways, Paddington. I am so excited about the space and this chair by Robin Day is a standout object in the shop. 9. HOTEL COSTES BLACK EDT I discovered this fragrance during one of my first trips to Paris to show the collection and I have worn it ever since. 10. BOOKS Carlo Scarpa is one of my favourite architects and this book on his work by Robert McCarter is beautifully put together. It sits proudly on the top of my bookshelf.
