New Darnum memorial
Less traffic noise and more standing space will be offered when a new war memorial is unveiled and dedicated at Darnum on Sunday at 11am.
Honouring service people from all wars and conflicts, the $10,500 memorial will take pride of place in front of the Darnum Hall with works completed just in time for Remembrance Day commemorations.
Project coordinator Irene Broadbent said the memorial was previously located between Main Street and the Princes Freeway. She said the traffic noise and people forced to stand on the road due to lack of space was “embarrassing”.
“We had more and more coming to our services,. We knew something had to be done about it.”
Ms Broadbent said the previous memorial paid tribute to the servicemen of World War I whilst the new plaque honours service people from all wars and conflicts.
Member for McMillan Russell Broadbent will unveil the memorial and Warragul Salvation Army captain Jeff Waller will conduct the dedication.
Thre will be a wreath laying ceremony, local school children singing the national anthem and Warragul RSL’s Noel Tucker reading The Ode.
Ms Broadbent said the new memorial was funded from a federal government “Saluting Their Service” grant and donations from the Warragul RSL, Trafalgar Community Bank, DarnumEllinbank Fire Brigade, Darnum Progress Association and Darnum Hall Committee.
