Have you considered your swimming pool?

-

With the bushfire season upon us even now, we again need to consider our fire safety plan. When it comes to the ‘stay’ or ‘go’ strategy, although the topic is very serious there is often quite a debate. Life is number one importance but you also have a large investment in your property, then there’s the loss of your memories, which is often only understood by those directly affected.

We have had ‘Ash Wednesday’ and now ‘Black Saturday’ that a lot of us now have stored in our memories. Peter Cannon particularly remembers the Canberra fires of 2003 that tore through the suburbia of that city. The next day as news reports were coming through there were houses burnt down and pools full of water.

Self-preservation is needed to be a big part of the strategy, but what assets have you to help you? The humble backyard swimming pool is often an asset that is over looked. To simply have a fire fighting pump that can draw water from the pool and hoses that can reach your most valuable assets is a great starting point. The swimming pool is usually close to the house and easily accessed. If you don’t have that, then a large outlet on your water tank is a good alternative too.

Simple hoses with firefighting nozzles are a good starting point, but having a fixed sprinkler system is also a good investment and adds further protection.

A last comment worth adding on this topic is remember mains water and power are quite often unavailable very early during these high danger periods.
