Have you suckled from a cow?

-

I enjoy diversity of opinion but it bothers me when those who wish to take the moral high ground use illogical statements to support their views.

Take for example the views expressed by Jenny Moxhan (Gaz 31/5)

In hoping that more farmers walk away from dairy farming Ms Moxham says that cows’ milk is not intended (but doesn’t say by whom) to be consumed by anyone (sic) apart from newborn calves.

It seems to me that the main intention of the dairy industry is in fact to produce milk and its by-products for the purpose of human consumption.

Ms Moxham states that suckling from a totally different species is abnormal and bizarre (whatever that means) and no other species on this planet does so.

Although I drink milk every day, I can’t recall ever having actually suckled from a cow. I wonder how many of your readers have done so.

In any event many things that humans do are “abnormal or bizarre” and unique to humans.

As far as I am aware, no other species on this planet engages in medical science.

I would expect that certain aspects of medical science involve abnormal and bizarre activities.

Does that mean that all doctors should hang up their stethoscopes or that all medical scientists should cease their research?

No other species (apart from owls) forms parliaments.

Should we do away with politicians and government and live in a world of complete anarchy.

What other species composes music, creates magnificent works of art, writes poetry or engineers incredible structures.

Should we humans cease any or all of these activities because no other species on this planet does so? Logic would suggest not. And don’t get me started on the suggestion that Indian mynas are not an environmental pest because they are only six inches tall. T. Kyle Warragul

This is the concept Justice Michael Kirby wants us to adhere to.

I bet the slave traders also thought they were better people because of their skin colour and therefore justified the horrible atrocities they did to black people.

Quite frankly the community is sick of hearing the ranting and fear mongering from a minority of people attacking people other than heterosexual type. The world will not implode when same sex marriage happens and life will be more tolerant with less ignorant people. Gaele Whitehouse Drouin

I wish to reply to the homophobic words of Roger Marks (Gaz 31/5). Could you please explain what you are really afraid of.

As a post op transgendered female and being diagnosed with a female brain more than 20 years ago I underwent necessary surgery in 1997.

From this time I have used female toilets without one problem encountered or caused. No I’m not gay in fact I am asexual - have many friends both straight and gay - don’t do drugs and play golf with classy ladies in competitions at local courses.

However my only negative was from bigoted youths who found pleasure in cowardly acts of verbal abuse (regular) from slow moving cars - stoning my home under cover of night, breaking glass on my driveway and cruelly killing my pet dog. simply because they couldn’t understand my situation.

Whilst not really advocating for same sex marriage I find it difficult to see how it will impact others.

For the record I have met Justice Kirby on many occasions and found him a charming and courteous man. Perhaps there should be more like him.

Tolerance is only a word but without it society is so much poorer. Debra Winter Drouin

Roger Marks returned to The Gazette and reminds us of his own particular myopic view of the world, with his views on same sex marriage.

He reminds us by equating the futile expectation of the accumulation of riches and material wealth for all, with that of social and moral justice.

In other words “I’m never going to be rich, so why should you achieve my marital status.”

Roger, neither I nor my family have any problems with you being a millionaire. It simply does not affect us so good luck to you.

Neither do we have a problem with you marrying your male partner, if that brings you happiness and fulfillment.

Further, I’m not sure that those in the USA who advocated and achieved marriage equality would appreciate you speaking for them by claiming they are ‘unhappy.’

Sadly, for you, Roger it will inevitably happen in Australia too, despite your selfish desire for exclusivity John Duck Trafalgar

As soon as i started reading "Unequal" (Gaz 31/5) I knew that it would be Roger Marks.

Roger you have completely missed the point, equality means that all people should be allowed the same basic rights.

Of course that does not include all of us being millionaires as you pointed out it means that two people who love each other should be allowed to marry regardless of their gender. Your scare tactics are just another homophobic rant. Lynne Hestdal Seaview
