Stand for the council
Baw Baw Shire Council will host a public information session for residents considering standing for council in the upcoming elections.
The information session for prospective candidates in the general elections will be held on July 6 from 7pm to 9pm in the council chambers.
Baw Baw Shire Council chief executive Helen Anstis said standing for council was a relatively simple process, but could be daunting if people didn’t know what was required or how to nominate and campaign.
“The information session will outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected.
“I strongly encourage any residents contemplating standing for election to attend this information session. If you’re unable to attend on this date, please visit one of our neighbouring council’s sessions,” said Ms. Anstis.
Speakers from neighbouring councils, and the Municipal Association of Victoria will provide information about the council area, and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.
A video presentation Q and A with councillors from other municipalities will assist prospective candidates to gain an understanding of what the public will expect of them as a councillor, time commitments, challenges and rewards.
The free session will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions.
Sessions also will be held at South Gippsland Shire Council on July 12, Latrobe City Council July 20, Cardinia Shire Council August 3 and Bass Coast Shire Council on August 22, August 23 and August 25.
