Garfield continues charge into six

Garfield continued its charge with a big win over Poowong putting them in the top six.

The Stars raced out to a six goal lead at quarter time and were never headed on the way to winning 20-17 (137) to 2-2 (14).

The final margin could have been greater had it not been for an inaccurate third term for the Stars, who registered a return of 2-8.

Harley Lacunes kicked five goals for the Stars, with Daniel Helmore, Brett Reid and Jack Barnes all chipping in with three majors.

Saxon Watson, Beau Scamporlin­o, Tyson Payne and John Atwell were also prominent.

Poowong were best served by Josh Chiavaroli, Tim Francis, Tim Hancock, Mathew Tober, Jake Cooper and Harley Robjant.

Persistent Magpies

Garfield pulled away after half time to record victory over a persistent Poowong, 12-11 (83) to 4-4 (28).

The Magpies held the Stars in the first half, facing a 13-point deficit at half time.

Four goals to none in the third term handed the Stars a buffer before going on to record a comfortabl­e win.

Chris Bogart kicked four goals, backed up by Jay Engellener with three majors.

Ray Smith, Tim Hatherall, Lachlan Schreurs and Jason Bailey were also prominent.

The Magpies were best served by Matthew Bolton, John Smith, Drew Leeds, Jack Lancaster, Gavin Notman and Nathan Bacon.

Stars have edge

Garfield held the edge to win the under 16s, 7-7 (49) to 3-4 (22).

The Magpies have shown improvemen­t in the under 16s and troubled the Stars at stages but ultimately couldn’t sustain the effort.

Trent McMahon, Matthew Bow, Lachlan Sauze, Joseph Verleg, Joel Batson and Ty Miller ensured the Stars maintained the advantage.

For the Magpies it was Lachlan De Kleuver, Brodie Ardley, Jye Loughridge, Brad Monson, Daniel Simons and Darcy Burgess keeping them in the contest.
