Learn more about gardening

Gardening is a relaxing hobby for all ages. It can also be very beneficial in terms of obtaining regular exercise. Most active gardeners live to what is described as a “ripe old age”.

There are many sources of information for those without a basic training in horticulture, not the least of which is the internet, which has now surpassed the use of gardening books.

However the most enjoyable way to collect together those gardening tips is to meet and discuss successes and problems with others that have already enjoyed their own successes.

The Warragul and District Garden Club meets every month and members can enjoy presentations from speakers with a wide range of expertise, both flower and vegetable gardeners.

A recent upgrade of the clubs digital equipment (supported by a community grant from Baw Baw Shire) means that speakers can support their talks with coloured slides and videos. New sound equipment with microphones for speakers has also been purchased.

Last year the club developed its own unique website which is available to both members and non-members. It contains useful information for all types of gardeners and is updated regularly. Details of future meeting are summarised on the home page.

There are two other aspects of the club’s activities, trips to gardens of interest and monthly competitions. Three or four trips are organised each year to gardens within an hour or so distance take place each year. Details and pictures of previous trips have been posted on the Warragul and District Gardening Club website with future planned trips on the events page.

Each meeting those members that wish to participate bring in plants, fruits and vegetables to compete in the various listed categories. Points are awarded with annual monetary prizes. Pictures of winners’ entries feature each month on the club website.

Warragul will host the one day conference of the South Gippsland Group of Horticultural Societies and Garden Clubs on September 26.

This will include visits to local gardens including the Eastern Park Community Garden. Anyone with an interest in gardening is welcome to attend.

The Warragul and District Garden Club meet on the last Monday of each month (except December and January). Doors open at 9am for exhibitors to bench entries, which must be in place by 9.30am for judging by a trained independent judge.

Tea and coffee is available before the main meeting, which starts at 9.45am. New members are most welcome and can join simply by attending.

Annual membership including insurance for bus trips is $10 with a $2 donation each meeting that includes participation in a plant raffle courtesy of a club sponsor.

The Warragul and District Garden Club website is www.warragulgardenclub.com and current sponsor details are all listed on the website.
