Round for the comeback kids

It was a round for the comeback kids in the Warragul and District Junior Football League with many teams coming from behind to snatch victory.

Snaps on the final siren saw teams clinch last ditch wins and excited screams from onlookers.

Meanwhile, Garfield and Longwarry will recognise the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) in their clash which has been moved to Saturday, July 9.

The game will be hosted at the Longwarry Recreation Reserve and will feature celebratio­ns including an official Smoking Ceremony and Traditiona­l Welcome Dance.

Under 14

A Yarragon side low on numbers battled it out against a generous Colts team who sent a few players over.

The Colts stole the first half, booting seven goals on the way to winning 9-8 (62) to 2-12 (24).

In mud laden conditions, Bunyip pushed their way into an early lead against the Neerim District Cats to take the win 18-15 (123) to 0-0 (0).

Warranor got off to a fast start through good ball movement and running in numbers to set up some early goals.

Warranor lifted through skillful football to eventually come away with a hard fought victory 14-6 (90) to 0-1 (1).

It was a tough contest between Hallora and Longwarry, both sides attacking the ball with strength and determinat­ion.

Hallora pushed their way back into the game in the fourth quarter but it was too late at that point, the Crows taking the win 12-4 (76) to 3-0 (18).

The Warragul Blues struggled to match the ferocity of the Stars on the day, going down to a more determined outfit 17-12 (114) to 0-1 (1).

Caldermead­e were strong in the third quarter putting good pressure on the Drouin side but couldn't match them on the scoreboard, going down 3-16 (34) to 2-2 (14).

Tarkyn Milojevic celebrated 100 games whilst Tom Burr played his 50th match. Under 12 The conditions were testing for the Colts and Yarragon.

Injuries were shared between the teams but they soldiered on with the Colts taking the victory, 4-2 (26) to 0-4 (4).

Neerim worked hard to get back into the game, playing the packs well.

Bunyip played out the game and took the points, 105 (65) to 0-0 (0).

Warranor were too strong on the day for the young Poowong-Loch team, winning 17-7 (109) to 0-0 (0).

Longwarry opened well, holding a twelve point lead over Hallora at half time.

The second half was a good showcase of junior footy with the game coming down to a one point margin, Longwarry stealing victory 4-6 (30) to 4-5 (29).

Warragul Blues and Garfield pushed hard and the game came down to the wire.

The Blues snapped a last second goal to win the game, 4-4 (28) to 3-5 (23).

It was a classic match between Caldermead­e and the Drouin Jets in slippery football conditions.

The Drouin Jets eventually ran away with the win, 159 (99) to 0-0 (0). Kobee Dore-Wilson celebrated his 50th game. Ellinbank opened well, holding the Cobras scoreless in the first quarter.

In the end the Drouin side ran away with the game, 7-3 (45) to 0-0 (0). Under 10 Strong tackles and huge marks were the highlights of a close contest between two even teams.

The Colts were in front looking for their first win but Yarragon swooped in and took the game, 3-2 (20) to 20 (12).

Both sides were fearless when approachin­g the ball with Neerim unable to convert their efforts into points. Bunyip took the game in the end, 1-4 (10) to 0-1 (1). Poowong-Loch gave it their all in the second half and showed spirit but could only manage to put points on the board whereas goals would have sealed them the win. Warranor won 2-1 (13) to 0-4 (4). Hallora celebrated two wins in a row displaying excellent skills against the Crows.

A goal by Connor Bennet pushed them over the line, with Longwarry putting in some great tackles but were just unable to get on the board, going down 1-7 (13) to 0-0 (0).

Garfield worked their way back into the game but were trounced by an eager Warragul side who continued to build a solid margin, 5-7 (37) to 1-0 (6).

It was a tough affair, both Caldermead­e and Drouin slugging out a feisty challenge.

The Cannons were a determined side with the scoreboard not accurately reflecting the quality of their play, going down 11-4 (70) to 0-0 (0). Zach McMillan celebrated his 50th game. An early goal from Ellinbank in the final quarter was a highlight but not enough to get them over the line against the Cobras, going down 4-6 (30) to 1-0 (6).
