Quilts on show

-

Over 100 quilts of all sizes and hues attracted plenty of attention at the Lioness Club of Warragul’s recent two-day quilt and craft exhibition.

This is the fourth quilt show staged by the club, with the previous show about two and a half years ago.

Show organiser Maria Rosato said there were more than 100 quilts and about 360 visitors from near and far.

The exhibition included two people’s choice awards: Warragul quilter June Knersh won the Saturday award and Bev Darby, also of Warragul, won the Sunday award.

The show included a special exhibition of 18 quilts by the late Joan Abrahams, which were entered by her daughter Deborah Allen of Yarragon.

In a talk introducing her mother’s quilts, Ms Allen explained that she was an amazing seamstress and dress designer who as a young woman won an award for “Gown of the Year”.

She made the clothing for Meryl Streep, Sam Neill and the baby Azaria Chamberlain for the movie Evil Angels.

She also made costumes for a Channel 9 mini-series called Weddings and a documentary on the American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 while flying around the world.

“The movie producers only had photos to go from and that was Mum’s specialty.”

Ms Allen said that after her mother retired, she took up quilting more seriously, taught quilting and was called on many times to judge quilts shows in South Australia.

Her last quilt won the people’s choice at the Gawler quilt show last year.

“Thank you for all admiring my mum’s amazing quilts and I hope it inspires you to ‘have a go’ as mum would say.”

The exhibition was staged at Danny’s The Venue, which proved to be a popular venue.

Organisers thanks the quilters who entered their works and the many visitors.

All profits will go to local charities.
