New blood sought for community house
Trafalgar and District Community Housing needs new blood.
A small dedicated committee has been ensuring the ongoing function of 12 community houses in Trafalgar for more than 30 years.
But, with some of the committee members ready to retire, the committee is hoping to attract new people to help with management of the units.
TDCH manages eight units in Ashby St and four units in Chapmans Rd.
Originally known as Fairview Homes, the first units opened in 1982.
The units were constructed with assistance from a federal government grant and were managed by Fairview Homes for the Aged – Trafalgar auxiliary.
The community housing project was initially launched to provide accommodation for elderly residents in an independent living environment as a transition before needing a care facility.
Long time committee member, treasurer and resident Joy Richardson said the committee was keen to attract some new people.
“We simply manage and maintain the units. It’s voluntary and there’s no fundraising or working bees.
Joy said all units were full and currently there was a waiting list.
She said all lawns and gardens were maintained through the committee
TDCH committee member and resident Barbara Wallace said the same people had been on the committee for many years and it was time to attract some new people.
She said anyone interested in community affairs would be suited to the committee.
“We just really need to keep it managed by community people.
“It was started by the community and run by the community so we want it to continue,” Joy said.
Committee meetings are held once a month. Joy said the small committee managed rent payments and organised maintenance where needed but it was not a huge burden or workload.
