The best of Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach’s name is synonymous with baroque music.
He elevated the musical language of the time to the pinnacle of its expressive power, fusing intellect, technique and emotion into some of the most enduring music of all time.
At the the West Gippsland Arts Centre next week, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra presents a program exploring the enormous range of contrasting moods and colours in Bach’s music, from the sublime cantatas to his ecstatic and virtuosic string concerti.
Sara Macliver’s superb soprano voice is the perfect vehicle for the moving Bach arias she performs with MCO in this program.
She also performs Calvin Bowman’s lush song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life), which was written for her and premiered with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010.
The program also showcases brilliant young violinist Anne-Marie Johnson as the soloist in Bach’s demanding Violin Concerto in D minor.
Following performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Bach: Spirit and Spectacle is at the West Gippsland Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday June 22. The concert is two hours with an interval.
Tickets are $58 for adults, $44 concession, $41 for members and $33 for under 18s.
