Men’s Shed meet tomorrow

-

The new Yarragon Men’s Shed group will hold a coffee, tea and sandwich lunch tomorrow at Dowton Park social rooms at 11.30am.

People interested in joining the Yarragon Men’s Shed are encouraged to attend, with the group looking to establish a committee including president, secretary and treasurer.

The event follows a successful public meeting for establishing a men’s shed in Yarragon at Dowton Park reserve recently.

Vice president of the Victorian Men’s Shed Association Lindsay Oates and member for Narracan Gary Blackwood were present, along with visitors from Trafalgar Men’s Shed, the Warragul Woodworkers Men’s Shed and men from Yarragon.

Mr Oates was encouraged by the number of people that had shown interest by adding their names to the lists that had been distributed around the town. He said that once men heard more about the establishment of a men’s shed in Yarragon and the variety of programs a shed could offer, those numbers would grow quickly.

Mr Oates advised that a men’s shed in Yarragon could provide the opportunity for participation in activities for men and assist in their health and wellbeing. He spoke of the diversity of men’s shed programs, mentioning that some sheds undertook wood work, some were into metal work, and others were into repairing and restoring old farm equipment or involved with many other projects depending on the men’s interests. Such programs led to the passing on of skills and learning of new skills.

Information was provided regarding how other sheds run, how the VMSA assists member sheds and promotes the health and wellbeing of men in our community through the Shed movement.

Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood spoke briefly of the benefit of men’s sheds and offered his support.

Until a shed can be constructed, the Dowton Park social rooms can be used as a meeting place for morning or afternoon teas or lunches as the group develops and plans the future.

Lunch will cost $5 to cover the cost of catering and an RSVP for numbers would be appreciated, contact Ross Follett on 0418 512 074.
