Colts women take first win

-

The Warragul Colts women travelled away on Saturday to play against Mt Eliza in round 11 of the Victorian Women’s Football League.

Mt Eliza had been playing well and sits sixth on the ladder with the Colts being bottom of the table and without a win for the season heading into the match.

The Colts were able to win their first game for the season, defeating Mt Eliza 4-9 (33) to 3-4 (22).

In the first quarter it was Colts having the ball down forward for the majority of the time, but inaccurate kicking meant that seven scoring shots to none only translated to a single goal but a handy quarter time lead to the Warragul girls by 12 points.

The second quarter started much the same but this time it was all Mt Eliza who were able to kick forward and accurate, giving them two straight goals to the Colts two points. At the half way mark it was the Colts with a slim twopoint margin and plenty of work for the last half of the match.

It was a tough slog for both teams in the third with plenty of contested ball and some great skills. Both sides defensive line prevented any major score for the quarter with a point being scored for the Colts and two points for Mt Eliza.

After a spirited final break talk by coach Jason Mitchell, the Warragul players gave their all and were able to move the ball forward numerous times resulting in two goals to one to take out their first win of the season by 11 points.

It was a fantastic team effort with so many out this round due to injury, but the team being bolstered by new players who were instrumental in some tough contested football.

Colts goals: Sarah Elson, Chloe Dodd, Brooke Radford and Zoe Marinus one each

Colts best: Joanna Langelaan, Tegan Rosin, Brooke Radford, Rebecca Whelan, Jessica Jensen and Zoe Marinus

Next week the Warragul Colts travel to Rosebud for their round 12 game against the Rosebud women.

The game starts at noon on Sunday and the Colts will be going into this match with a boost in confidence and hopefully some important ins to the side.

Spots are still available to play if interested, phone coach Jason Mitchell on 0488 254 065.
