Warragul win nail biter

-

From page 72 Both sides were able to get a goal each but the Colts were able to prevent numerous goals being kicked by Edithvale-Aspendale who had more scoring shots than the Colts, reducing the margin at half time with Colts leading by one point.

A lot of packs and ball ups were in order for the third quarter, both sides tackling hard in an effort to get the upper hand, but it was very difficult for the players to get a clear run.

At times Edithvale were able to clear the pack but the Colts back line was too strong, booting the ball out of defence and into attack. Both teams scored a goal each and again it was the Colts by one point at three quarter time.

An exciting final quarter was coming up with the Eagles wanting this win and they started well, also having the advantage of kicking towards the scoring end of the match.

The eagles were able to get the ball out of the centre quickly pushing it into the forward and scoring a point and then a goal to take the lead. It was now up to the Colts to reply and they did.

In a spirited team effort the girls took possession and kicked forward but could only manage two points to take them within four points of EdithvaleAspendale.

Again some congested packs started to form while the ball was moving forward, the Colts kicking long into the pack with Rebecca Whelan taking possession and snapping a goal to give the Colts a two point lead with four minutes left on the clock.

Edithvale quickly dominated from the centre bounce, kicking long into the forward and took possession numerous times but the defensive plays of the Colts was impressive and a dominating tackle by Natasha Cocker and Tegan Rosin in the final seconds of the match denied Edithvale a goal and a possible finals appearance with the Colts winning by two points.

It was an impressive game of women's football to watch with both teams giving their all. With relentless tackling and determination the game could have gone either way, but for the Warragul Colts it was their night, giving them two wins for the season and taking them off the bottom of the ladder.

Warragul goals: Rebecca Whelan 2, Tara Leigh, Louie Patten and Brooke Radford 1 each.

Warragul best: Tara, Johanna Langelaan, Tegan Rosin, Taryn Orgill, Natasha Bennett

Next week Warragul are playing Endeavour Hills at Eastern Park. This is a game between ninth and 10th on the ladder. It will be a cracking game of women's VWFL senior football with the Colts looking for their third win of the year.

People are encouraged to get down to Eastern Park on Sunday and support the women in their last game of the year. A barbecue lunch will be supplied for hungry spectators while they enjoy future AFL stars, with prospective players also welcome to attend to watch the action.
