Rebates available for quad rollovers

-

Farmers who buy rollover protection for their quad bike or an alternative work vehicle will be eligible to claim a rebate from September 1.

The state government’s $6 million subsidy scheme is designed to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by quad bike rollovers.

Last year 22 people were killed in quad bike incidents across Australia. In Victoria, two farmers died this year after being crushed by their quad bikes.

Farmers operating a business in Victoria with no more than 19 full-time employees, own a quad bike for work purposes, and use farming as their main source of income, are eligible to apply for rebates of up to $1200. The state government is offering rebates of: $1200 for the purchase of a safer vehicle such as a side-by-side vehicle (SSV) or a small utility vehicle (SUV). The safer vehicle must be designed for use in an agricultural environment, and at point of sale have rollover protection and a fitted seatbelt

Up to $600 for the purchase of an operator protective device (OPD), which can be claimed on a maximum of two OPDs. An OPD must have been designed and manufactured in accordance with approved engineering standards and independently tested to be eligible for the rebate

Rebates will be available for equipment purchased from September, 1 with claims able to be lodged from October 1.

The scheme to be administered by the Victorian Farmers Federation and WorkSafe, will run for up two years with rebates allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Market report for 17th and 18th August. Wednesday Fat Sale 324 head. Thursday Cow Sale 29 Bulls, 471 Cows.

324 head were yarded on Wednesday for the fat sale. Amongst the pens were several lots of good stores which saw prices reach up to 410 cents per kilo. The vealer section managed a top of 405 cents per kilo for processor calves. A larger number of bullocks sold to strong demand, average weights were slightly lighter but the better prices were more consistent with the extra numbers. Steers and heifers both contained a bigger percentage of secondary head which pulled averages back in both categories. Although the heifer section saw the better end lift with the top price up 30 cents, this larger number of secondary head in turn resulted in a slight dip in the yard average on paper but the sale was regarded as dearer by agents. This week’s yard average was 341.3 cents.

22 bullocks made to 363.2, back 2 and averaged 349.1, up 18.

62 heifers made to 383.2, up 31 and averaged 304.9, back 7.

55 steers made to 362, back 17 and averaged 313.5, back 35. 178 veal made to 405, up 6 and averaged 354.8, up 4. Thursday’s sale contained 90 less head but there was no less demand as 29 bulls topped at 317.2 cents and averaged 4 cents better at 270.8. With 471 cows penned bidding was brisk as the top made to 332.2 cents. Cows averaged 11 cents at 246.1. This week’s yard average lifted 10 cents to 248.1.
