Explosive semi finals

It was an explosive round of semi finals for the Warragul and District Junior Football league, which saw some major upsets and grand final spots clinched.

The Drouin Jets, Warranor and Garfield clubs saw the majority of play with exciting games to come next week in what's the last opportunit­y for the sides to book a spot on the final day.

Under 14

It was a quick start by both teams in the first semi final.

The Drouin Jets managed to open up the scoring.

Warranor replied, applying pressure and starting to run in numbers with the ball to limit the Jets' scoring opportunit­ies - setting up a couple of goals in the second term.

The third quarter was tight, the Jets moving forward with the ball and Warranor struggling to clear the ball out of defence.

The Jets ran hard into the final quarter, setting up several scoring opportunit­ies and winning the game, 8-4 (52) to 2-2 (14).

Working into a heavy wind, Garfield started well in the second semi final.

The Stars locked the ball into their forward line and kicked a goal to break even for the first quarter.

Bunyip answered with a few goals, but Garfield’s ability to move the ball quickly down the field was to their advantage.

In the second quarter, the Stars set up their win, moving the ball quickly into their forward line and making the most of their opportunit­ies to kick four goals.

The second half was tight and tough footy with Garfield holding their ground to win through to the grand final, 9-9 (63) to 2-4 (16).

Under 12

Warranor won the toss and then it was on for the second semi final against Warragul Blues.

The game was a fierce contest, the type you'd expect from a high-intensity semi final encounter.

The Blues adapted quickly to the blustery conditions, leading well and beating Warranor to the ball.

Warranor were extremely strong in the ruck, but their forward advances were mostly cut down.

The Warragul Blues made the most of their opportunit­ies resulting in a decent score margin, 4-5 (29) to 2-0 (12).

The Blues prevailed in the end, eager to get to the grand final in two weeks.

Bitter conditions for coaches and players saw the Jets and Garfield face off in the first semi final.

Garfield started off really well, kicking two goals to nothing against the wind.

In a tight last half, the Jets fought hard and never gave up, trying their hardest to hold off Garfield.

The Drouin side weren't able to capitalise on their opportunit­ies which gave Garfield the game in the end, 3-9 (27) to 2-3 (15).

Under 10

The Drouin Jets opened slowly, looking up to their older boys to try and edge their way back into the game in the first semi final against Poowong-Loch.

The second half saw the Jets side lift significan­tly starting to move the ball forward as a team. PoowongLoc­h stayed solid in defence however - keeping them scoreless.

The tackling and defensive play shown by the Bulls was excellent, their first quarter scoring allowing them to take the win in the end, 1-2 (8) to 0-0 (0).

Cool windy conditions met players as they stepped on the turf at Poowong to battle it out in the second semi final.

The start of the game was gritty, both sides pushing to win the ball back in their end.

The Blues managed to get an early goal on the board. W

arranor attacked and continued to pressure the Blues but weren't successful.

The Blues held off Warranor's late flurry and kept their shots on target to win the game, 2-1 (13) to 1-0 (6).
