Warragul club hosts conference
“Beautiful Gardens are not made by saying ‘Oh How Beautiful’ and sitting in the shade” is a quotation attributed to the famous poet Rudyard Kipling.
Those of us who are keen gardeners know that to achieve an attractive and successful garden takes time and effort. However the sense of satisfaction and the health benefits of gardening make it well worthwhile.
Gardening both for beauty and food production is popular in this area of Australia and clubs where keen gardeners can gain more knowledge exist right across the state. The South Gippsland Region of Horticultural Societies and Garden Clubs numbers nine such clubs from San Remo in the west to Welshpool in the east.
The Warragul and District Garden Club, the most northern club in the group, this year hosts the annual conference. It will be held at the Senior Citizens’ Centre in Warragul on Monday September 26. Admission is free both for club members and anyone with an interest in gardening.
The guest speaker on the day will be David Dunstan who is the Urban Operations manager for the Baw Baw Shire. David has had a lifetime involved in the establishment and maintenance of parks and gardens in and around Melbourne, before taking up his current appointment here.
He will use a pictorial presentation to describe the work involved in meeting the community’s expectations in relation to parks, gardens and open space in the major towns and the minor residential areas. This includes planning, design, capital works and maintenance. In his world, there is little chance of ‘sitting in the shade’.
Each club will provide a brief report on recent activities and then after lunch there will be visits to a few local gardens culminating at the highly successful Eastern Park Community Garden where afternoon tea will be served.
During the morning, exhibits from South Gippsland clubs will be staged and there will also be a plant and produce stall.
