Undermanned Demons fall short

-

An undermanned Koo wee rup was gallant in going down to Cora Lynn in the under 16s grand final.

With only 17 players taking the field, the Demons were unlucky in going down by just two points, 4-6 (30) to 310 (28).

Koo wee rup have been undermanned for the entire season, fielding a team with no more than 18 players each week and again they showed plently of fight.

The Demons finished with all the momentum. Crueled by the fact there is no time on in the earlier games, the Demons may well have pinched it had the match gone on for another few minutes.

Koo wee rup came home with a rush, restricting the Cobras to just one behind in the final term as they edged closer.

Robert Laurie missed early and Cora Lynn continued to force behinds under the pressure as the Demons edged to 1-10.

The Demons finally broke through late in the term following some impressive follow up work from Brody Sungalis, who was awarded the medal for best player on the ground.

Sungalis bombed long and followed up his own kick, winning a free kick for high contact to send the Demons forward again.

Astrong mark and goal reduced the margin to eight points as Koo wee rup sniffed an upset.

The Demons went long from the centre tap and converted to close the margin to two points.

The shot on goal had finished up in the lake and killed valuable time as the spare ball had to be rushed on to the field.

With no time on the Demons were left with less than 10 seconds to score and it was effectively game over, the Cora Lynn camp finishing with elation with their two point victory.

Earlier Cora Lynn largely held sway against the undermanned Demons to edge ahead in the third term.

Neither side were able to score a goal in a tight first term, both sides registering just the one behind.

Cora Lynn lost important player Chase Blackwood and it was the Demons who would register the first major.

Mitchell Cammarano sent the ball forward from the wing and Mitchell Davey roved the pack to snap the goal.

Both sides traded behinds before the Cobras went long through Ryan Hartley to set up a goal over the back.

The Cobras went forward for another snap on goal, only to be penalised for running to far and head into half time trailing by two points.

Chase Blackwood returned to the field and was used up forward for the Cobras.

He was instrumental in kicking two goals to see the Cobras establish an 18point lead at the final change.

The Demons finished with all the momentum but ran out of time and were left to think of what may have been.

Along with best on ground medalist Sungalis, the talent of Matthew Voss, Thomas Glassbarrow, Cammarano and Jason Cox ensured the Demons would never give up.

Blackwood was inspirational for the Cobras, with Darcy Jones, Levi Munns, Max Hanks, Blake York and Liam Taylor also prominent.

Cora Lynn under 16 coach Michael Ryan was full of praise for his side post-match, with his team including players in their first year of football.
