Warragul sub branch RSL

The monthly meeting of Warragul sub-branch of RSL was held on Monday, September 5 at 2pm at the clubrooms at 94 Albert Rd, Warragul.

On August 16 a commemorat­ive breakfast was held to honor the 50th anniversar­y of the Vietnam War. It was well attended by members of the RSL as well as Vietnam Veterans and their partners. Many other functions were held throughout the state in August commemorat­ing the anniversar­y.

On Tuesday September 6 members went by coach to visit Ripponlea where they were taken on a conducted tour of the mansion. Afterwards they visited Bentleigh RSL for lunch.

Do you play carpet bowls? Members are invited to join other members and enjoy a game every Wednesday afternoon. Come along and relax at a friendly game.

A well-known member of the sub-branch for many years, Les Webb, will be celebratin­g his 100th birthday on October 2.

Congratula­tions Les. No doubt you will be looking forward to that important milestone.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 4 at 2pm. The branch look forward to seeing all members there, and invite any person who is eligible to come and join them at the vibrant sub-branch.

Warragul District Historical Society

Rob Robson, the director of the West Gippsland Arts Centre, will be the guest speaker at next Monday’s monthly meeting of the Warragul and District Historical Society.

Rob will speak on the proposed future of the arts centre, detailing the planned alteration­s and extensions.

The historical society meets on the last Monday of the month at 7.30pm in the Old Shire Offices in Queen St, Warragul.

Guest speaker at last month’s meeting was Phil Cantillon, the director of community assets at Baw Baw Shire, who spoke on the Warragul CBD streetscap­e project.

Phil said the town’s streetscap­e was planned as early as 1985. The emphasis was on Smith St between Palmerston and Williams St, with a pedestrian priority zone and 90-degree parking. Smith St became one way, with the exit through Market Place (William Square).

“Much of that 1985 work came up with what we have today,” he said.

The immediate area of interest now was Smith St, Queen St, Palmerston St, traffic signals at Napier/Queen, and roundabout­s at Mason/ Palmerston and Albert/Mason.

West Gippsland Genealogic­al Society

The Genealogic­al Society monthly meeting on Thursday.

A member from the Cornish Group at the Genealogic­al Society of Victoria will be speaking.

A member’s night was held at last month’s meeting. Members were given names of some of the local district pioneers to research and were to use resources available in the society’s library. It was a very interestin­g evening.

The GUM family tree maker workshop held on Monday, August 22 was well attended and enjoyed by all.

The group attending the hands-on research workshops conducted on the other four Mondays in August at the Society’s library were very enthusiast­ic.

Both workshops were held in conjuntion with National Family History month.

The August meeting was given over to a plant auction to raise funds for the club.

Large quantities of plants and produce were all sold. At times there was spirited bidding for some items resulting in a good financial outcome.

Plans for the conference on September 26 were discussed with various tasks allotted to members.

The full day meeting is open to anyone with an interest in gardening and members were requested to bring friends along. The conference will take the place of the normal monthly meting.

The day will open with a talk by David Dunstan who is responsibl­e for Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces in the Baw Baw Shire.

Then after reports from each of the nine participat­ing clubs from San Remo in the west to Welshpool in the east, there will be visits to local gardens, the last of which will be the Eastern Park community garden.

Donna Hallum, the garden’s coordinato­r, will describe the success of this popular garden during afternoon tea.

Entry to the full day of this gardener’s conference is free and will be held at the usual venue of Senior Citizen’s Centre, Mason Street, Warragul from 9.30am.

There will be a plant and produce stall plus a benched exhibition by the various club members plus chances to win door prizes.

Students at Federation Training welcomed guest speakers from the Gippsland branch of the Aviacultur­al Society of Australia to the Warragul campus recently.

Branch secretary Dean Rowlands of Drouin and committee member Tony Grima of Willow Grove conducted two sessions with students, talking about bird feeding, breeding, hand rearing and aviculture.

Mr Rowlands said the sessions generated much interest from the students.

The Gippsland branch of the Aviacultur­eal Society meet monthly with a visit to an aviary.
