Edges out team mate Paredes for medal

- By Keith Anderson Warragul rover Brad Scalzo has won this year’s Trood Award and Rodda medal as Gippsland League’s best and fairest.

He won a thrilling vote count at the annual presentati­on dinner last night edging out Gulls team mate Nathaniel Paredes for the award with a three-vote best on ground performanc­e in the final game against Maffra.

Paredes led by one vote going into the last round but didn’t poll

Scalzo becomes the fourth Warragul player to win the Trood Award and Rodda medal joining John Gallus (1975), David Mills (1996) and Des Barr (2006).

The top netball award, the Hutchison Medal, for the best and fairest in A grade was won by Montana Holmes of Moe by one vote from Wonthaggi’s Courtney Blair.

Other best and fairest counts last night for the Hartley Medal in the reserves football saw a win to Wonthaggi’s Nicholas Tucker.

Tnarly Hood of Maffra won the B grade netball Pearce Medal and, in C grade, the Proctor Medal went to by Sarah Edey, also from Maffra.

The junior football and netball vote counts and presentati­ons were held last week.

In football the Wilkinson Medal for the best and fairest Under 18 player went to Hudson Holmes of Maffra and and the Shaw-Carter Medal for the Under 16s to Bairnsdale’s Ben McKinnon.

The netball best and fairest winners were Faith Middle of Maffra (17&Under), her club mate Emma Allman (15&Under) and Madelaine Galea from Moe (13&Under).
