Drouin

On Saturday it was just like a return to the early days.

Golfers didn’t resort to playing in gumboots but it might not have been such a bad idea. Heavy rain on an already saturated course restricted play to the front nine.

Given the difficult conditions scoring was surprisingly good. It took a count back for Glenn Flowers to take the prize from Jason Stirzaker when they both recorded 43.

Other ball winners were Eric Robbins 42, Ron Noncentini 41 and Geoff Closter 40.

This Saturday is stableford. Sunday is the mixed foursomes with an 11am start. Entry is at the pro shop prior to the event.

Garfield

In horse racing terms you needed to be a wet tracker this week as the course is now saturated with any rainfall simply sitting around our water logged course, hence preferred lies are now in play through the green.

It didn’t concern Gary Bassett one little bit as he backed up last week’s winning effort in A grade by doing best again this week in Saturday’s single par event with a winning score of plus four.

Best score for B grade was Evan Williams with plus five playing off a mark of 16. Best in for C grade was Doug Eastick, scoring two down off his mark of 23.

Account the prevailing conditions it was a field of 58 in total who presented to the starter. Just the 10 golfers in total were able to score a square round or better.

The highlight of Saturday’s event was Gus McKillop who went around in plus three playing off scratch.

Considering the conditions this score was scintillating, which featured birdies on the first two holes and again on the 10th and 17th par fives with just the one wipeout hole, being the par three fouth hole. McKillop’s round equated to a score of 66 off the stick.

Shane Male scored the two nearest the pins on both the par three eighth and 14th holes in his completed round of minus eight. Rex Turner also had a nice round that concluded with a score of plus four.

Due to the conditions golf carts are currently not allowed for use, so if you require one, phone the club to enquire first.

On Thursday it was the second round of the clubs’ 2016 54-hole mid-week championship and once again due to the wet week, a field of just the 21 turned up for a round.

Best score for the day was achieved by a visitor from Trafalgar, being Duart Perrin who scored a very nice 38 points playing off his mark of 13.

Trevor Burnie did best in B grade with a score of 36 points playing off his mark of 21.

Down the balls to two other golfers in A grade who scored 37 points. John Coutts takes a one shot lead from Geoff Roberts and a further two shots back to Trevor Male for this week’s final round for the mid week title.

1. John Coutts 68 2. Geoff Roberts 67 3. Trevor Male 65 4. Peter Lazarus 62

5. John Scale 61, Clinton Smith 61, Peter Johnson 61.

The preliminary finals of the 2016 footy golf have now been played with the grand final to be played this Saturday between the Iona Ibises and the Berwick Bears, who will go in as favorites for the title.

Iona (Ken Pettiford, Lou Milner, Paul Kaye, Glenn Wells and Wally Poulter) defeated Pakenham (Glenn Whelan, Don Smith, Marty Atkins, John Simcocks and Dave Lawler) 98 stableford points to 88.

Berwick (Mick Neylan, Trevor Male, John Blair, Peter Lazarus and Peter Marquis) defeated Cardinia (Bob Calderara, Tolly Baharis, Ian Hopper Carl Gilbert and Paul Renehan) 106 stableford points to 103

Stuart Whaley claimed victory in the captain’s handicap match play final with a two hole up score over Steve Kohut, whom just like his predecessors in Franklin and Garratt found the handicap margin just too much of a hurdle to overcome when Kohut was faced with a starting deficit of some 21 shots.

Next week is a game of single stableford. Results: Thursday, single stableford (field of 21): A grade: Duart Perrin (Trafalgar) (13) 38; B grade: Trevor Burnie (21) 36; DTL: T Male 37, P Marquis 37; NTP: 8th L Hall (Yallourn), 9th H Thomas (Yallourn), 11th T Male, 14th R Dyke (Trafalgar), 16th D Perrin (Trafalgar); Golden card: Harry Thomas

Saturday, single par (field of 58): A grade: Gary Bassett (13) +4; B grade: Evan Williams (16) +5; C grade: Doug Eastick (23) -2; DTL: R Turner +4, A McKillop +3, G Wells +3, C Cousin +2 , M Hirt +1, P Skinner Square (cb); NTP: 4th C Gilbert, 8th S Male, 9th M Atkins, 11th P Johnson, 14th S Male, 16th C Cousin; NTP 2nd shot: A grade: S Male; B grade: D Williams.

Sunday, single stableford: 1st Craig Hunter (11) 33cb, 2nd Peter McNeish (6) 33.
