Wednesday Fat Sale 245 head. Thursday Cow Sale 24 Bulls, 399 Cows.

Extra numbers in the vealer section this week lifted the yarding number. Demand in the vealer section saw strong competition with higher prices remaining over several pens in the top section. Secondary pens also sold strongly with the lighter numbers and the wet conditions up north holding prices up across all categories. Again only a few bullocks were in attendance with three head yarded. Heifer numbers were firm with good condition and this forced prices upward. Steer numbers were back and restockers were underrepresented. Therefore prices eased in this area, especially in the secondary pens, with the better pens holding firm. This week’s yard average rose 7 cents to 346.3.

43 heifers made to 387.6, up 17 and averaged 319.6, up 8.

30 steers made to 380.2, firm and averaged 320.7, back 35.

168 veal made to 434.6, up 17 and averaged 366.6, up 18.

This improved demand and prices carried on over to Thursday, as 24 bulls yarded topped out at 318.6, up 14 on the previous week. The bull section averaged 291.2, up 25 cents. Cows also had a good sale with a top of 317.2, up 33cents to average 9 cents better at 243. With the yard average of 247 cents up 12 cents on last week.

1. Landmark,

More than 50 people attended an enlightening discussion on dairy herd nutrition on Wednesday night..

The Young Dairy Network night was all about getting the basics of cow nutrition right.

General manager of ruminants at Alltech Oceania Rob McFarlane led the discussion, with dairy technical specialist Don Blackwell and Alltech Gippsland sales representative Jake Frecklington sharing their collective wisdom.

YDN Gippsland co-ordinator Irene Baker said it was one of the most informative nights she had been involved with.

“Right from the start, everyone was really engaged with the subject,” she said.

“Straight away, the Alltech guys asked what the audience wanted to talk about, so from that point on, everyone was fully involved in the conversation.”

“When we have nights like this that get right to the heart of a vital subject like cow nutrition, the people who come along understand how important it is to their farm business and they try to get as much out of the evening as they can. It’s great to be a part of it.”

Anyone interested in further YDN activities can contact Irene on 0428 889 337 or irene@gippsdairy.com.au
