Dell returns from United Kingdom tour

-

Warragul seniors’ cricketer Peter Dell has returned from the Australian over 70s touring test team to the United Kingdom.

Peter played 13 games in 23 days (winning 11) touring throughout the United Kingdom in his key role as wicket keeper.

President of the Gippsland Goannas over 60s competition, Peter has been a keen cricketer since taking the game up as a boy.

He played for Traralgon for many years only giving it up when some younger players suggested he was “too old for it.”

He took up seniors’ cricket about five years ago playing with the Gippsland Goannas in the Victorian over 60 Cricket Association.

The touring team comprised players from Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

Peter said the grounds they played on were magnificent and many of those he had read about as a child.

He recalled driving along narrow hedge lined laneways to small country villages where the cricket grounds were in perfect condition.

“They were perfect grounds and everyone was great.

“We played everywhere from seaside villages to the midlands.”

Another highlight was wearing the Australian blazer and baggie green cap.

“It was great to go out onto the ground to the sound of the national anthem and to see the Australian flag flying.

“From a lad of 10 to 11 listening to cricket from England on the radio and then 60 years later to be doing it was just an incredible feeling,” he said.

Peter said seniors’ cricket was becoming fashionable throughout Australia and growing.

“It is extremely competitive and I am just living the dream” he said.
