Stephen crowned United’s best
Robbie Stephen has been awarded Warragul United Soccer Club’s best and fairest.
The silky smooth Scotsman took the honors in the seniors, polling an impressive 55 votes. Robbie had a fantastic year marshaling the backline and was a worthy winner.
Adam Ahmadzai got off to an absolute flyer this year and finished the season as runner up, amassing 51 votes. The hardworking midfield ‘terrier’ had his best campaign ever at the WUSC and his efforts were duly rewarded.
After a few years away from the WUSC Michael Lewry came back with a bang in 2016, snaring the reserves best and fairest award. Lewry, who polled 57 votes, won the hearts of the supporters with a combination of his no nonsense, aggressive brand of football and leadership qualities he brought to a young squad.
Veteran Paul Cooper, who was unable to commit to senior football at WUSC this season, had an expected stellar year in the twos and gathered 55 votes to scoop up the runner up best and fairest award.
The versatile Cooper was a welcome addition to the squad displaying some vintage class along the way.
Voted by the players, it was fitting that the two senior and reserve best and fairest winners take out the prestigious player’s player of the year award.
To be the best player at a club requires talent only, however if your talent is not accompanied with commitment, respect or companionship towards your teammates you do not win this type of award.
The two, popular and humble men are WUSC to the core and are worthy recipients. The way they in which they have carried themselves on and off the field is a credit to them and the club.
If you looked up the word commitment in the sporting dictionary a picture of Adrian and Donna Huizer would pop up for sure.
The WUSC is lucky to have Adrian and Donna and greatly appreciate the hard work they have contributed to the club this year. They were rewarded with the best club person award.
Homegrown talent Dayne Dodenciu has taken a huge leap forward this year and his achievements have earned him the title of young player of the year.
Dayne made his debut in the seniors this year and had a string of fine performances showcasing his ‘back down to no-one’ approach.
The club look forward to seeing Dayne’s unbridled endeavor in the red and black next season.
