Mother warns of drink spiking

- By Catherine Watson

A Warragul mother is warning young people visiting night clubs and hotels in the city to take care after her daughter’s drink was spiked.

The 19-year-old ended up wandering the city streets dazed and lost in the early hours of the morning.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said her daughter and three friends went into a Lonsdale St nightclub last Saturday night and ordered a drink.

“Shortly afterwards, my daughter became disorientated and started to feel lost, drunk and overwhelmed.

“Because of her condition, the bouncers of the club asked her to leave.”

The woman said that, as a polite country girl, her daughter complied with the request, and so became separated from her friends, who did not know what had happened to her.

Outside, she walked the streets then rang her mother in tears, saying she didn’t know where she was or what had happened.

Her mother told her to catch a taxi to a nearby friend’s house.

She spoke to the taxi driver via her daughter’s phone, explained the situation, assured him that the bill would be taken care of at the friend’s house and set off to the city to collect her daughter.

However, she said that when her daughter vomited in the cab, the driver stopped the taxi and threw her out, first taking all her money - $80 – out of her purse.

The daughter had no idea where she was when she was bundled out of the taxi.

Her mother told her to use the mobile GPS to pinpoint her location then contacted her friend, who found the daughter alone and still confused.

Her mother said her daughter was asleep when she arrived but woke at 4am and was normal again.

“I think she got rid of most of what was in her stomach when she vomited.”

She said her daughter had recovered physically but was still traumatised by the incident.

“Country people are so trusting. I don’t want any other families to go through what we went through.”

The woman contacted the nightclub. She said they were very concerned and are reviewing CCTV footage to see if they can identify the drink spiker.

She also contacted Yellow Cabs about the driver’s behaviour but was told to contact police.
