Three women, one iconic album

- TICKET GIVEAWAY

It’s 45 years since a then little know singer/songwriter Carole King released Tapestry.

It went on to become one of the classic albums of all times, selling more than 25 million copies and being ranked at No. 36 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

Over the years, the songs – think I Feel the Earth Move, You’ve got a Friend, and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman - have been re-imagined and covered by some of the biggest names in pop music.

Now two of Australia’s favourite singers, Vika Bull and Debra Byrne, have joined their number.

In August they performed Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King, to full houses and critical acclaim at the Melbourne Arts Centre.

Debra Byrne says she’s loved the music and lyrics of Carole King since she was 12 or 13, and first sang It’s Too Late on Young talent Time.

“I was very aware of the album and loved it. There was also the James Taylor connection. I came to her music via his music.”

She and Vika Bull do not attempt to mimic Carole King’s voice and style – rather they bring their own style and a “respectful” interpretation. “We don’t mess with the melody.”

The show is a mixture of solos, duets and dialogue.

The Gazette is offering three double tickets to Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King.

To enter, send an envelope to the Warragul & Drouin Gazette, PO Box 305, Warragul 3820, or drop it in to our office at 97 Queen Street.

Write your name and contact number on the back of the envelope. Entries close at noon on Monday, October 21, and winners will be contacted that afternoon.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Byrne says. “We got three standing ovations at the Arts Centre which clearly shows me that people got what they wanted.”

Asked if she has a favourite King song, she points to another album, Rhymes and Reasons. The song is “I think I can Hear You”. “It is just beautiful.”

Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King perform is at the West Gippsland Arts Centre at 3pm and 8pm on Saturday, November 26.

Tickets are $59 for the 3pm matinee and $69 for the evening performance.
