Drouin

After a week’s break due to the Melbourne Cup, the Gippsland Golf Croquet pennant competition resumed and saw the Drouin team travel to Phillip Island to play the top of the ladder team.

Phillip Island’s santa anna greens, running very fast, gave the home team an edge for competition conditions and the singles rounds saw Drouin struggle to come to grips with the quick running surface.

Heather Bullen, stepping up into first position, managed to win both her singles games, with the scores of 7/5 against Pat Wilsmore and 7/4 against David Mann.

Harvey Langford and Nanette Fry had close first round contests, but both went down with scores of 7/6 against the Island’s Margaret Horvath and Pam Lake. In his second-round match, Harvey lost 7/5 to Pam Lake and Nanette lost 7/4 to Margaret Horvath.

Kathleen Willems found the going tough and went down 7/2 and 7/3 against David Mann and Pat Wilsmore.

Phillip Island led six games, 51 hoops to Drouin’s two games, 40 hoops at the completion of the singles rounds.

At the commencement of the doubles, Drouin had adjusted more to the lightning fast greens and of the six doubles played, there were four 7/6 game results.
