Garfield win challenge shield

-

This week’s major event was the Graeme Shield which is the annual challenge match against Mirboo North.

It has now been played for 20 years with Garfield holding the overall lead 12 wins to seven, with one year being not played.

This year’s match proved to be a very close affair indeed with the home team averaging a stableford score of 32.81 per player, just a pimple in front of our guests whom came in with an average score of 32.64 per player.

Best players for the home team were Steve Kohut who scored a brilliant 42 points playing off a handicap of just seven.

The white-hot Richard Gould backed up his win for last week’s monthly medal with another great round of 41 points. Best score in for the visitors was 37 points.

For all those not playing in this team event, a game of single stableford was the other competition.

Kohut’s 42 points gave him the A grade win while John Sanderson took out the B grade event with a score of 39 points.

Clinton Smith won the C grade event with a score of 41 points playing off his mark of 22. Kohut topped off a great day by scoring the two nearest the pins on both the 11th and 14th holes.

A score of 38 points or better was required to win a ball down the line, which was achieved by another 10 players.

Next week is the annual family, parent and sibling day played as a fourball aggregate stableford game.

Thursday’s game of single stableford was almost a complete washout as the rain took fold throughout the day.

A hardy field of 16 brave souls, some may use another term, turned up for their regular week day round.

Only the five players actually completed the 18 holes, with Peter Lazarus winning the day with a less than average score of 32 points.

The day improved enough for a field of 29 to register for that evening’s twilight fixture with James Grant taking out the victory with a score of 21 points.

Friday saw the rescheduled 4BBB stableford take place with once again the weather looking quite ominous as the field of 28 pairs struck their opening tee shots at 9.30am.

However it turned out to be a nice day with, typically, a score of 50 points plus required to take out the prize.

Mick Mathews and Ian Lidstone did just that with a great score of 52 points to defeat the pairing of Tony Power and Lou Artico very comfortable indeed, with a score of 46 points.

The women’s event was taken out by Cecilia Stewart and Irene Thomas with a winning score of 44 points to just scrape over the line from the regular pairing of Vicky Kelly and June Hunter who scored just the one point less. Results: Thursday, single stableford (field of 16): 1st P Lazarus (23) 32.
