Red Cross celebrates first aiders

-

An important event coming up in January is a celebration of Red Cross first aid.

This program has been running in Gippsland for 40 years, and is ceasing at the end of 2016.

This is regrettable, but will bring Victoria into line with the rest of Australian Red Cross and recent restructuring of emergency services.

Central West Gippsland has been lucky to have Kath Paynter as program lead for first aid for the past 25 years, and she has taught first aid to hundreds of people over this time.

First Aiders have provided services at many regular events from school sports, equestrian events, motor bikes, cycling and the Melbourne show.

If you have ever been a Red Cross First Aider, a long-term client or Red Cross supporter, come along to support Kath and the First Aid team.

The celebration is dubbed “the last hurrah” and is being held on January 21 at Blackwood Centre, 255 Brock Rd Hallora commencing at 2pm. Reply to Kath on 0427 278 542 or Dorothy Sturgess on 0408 595 074 by December 31.

Other emergency services provided by Red Cross are continuing, and a team is ready to be activated in an emergency. A single incident has been responded to recently.

At the December 1 Christmas dinner, branch chairman Shirley presented long service awards to Bonnie Bransgrove (30 years), Dorothy Sturgess (20 years) and Tara Langres (10 years).

The Red Cross shop needs support of your donations of quality clothes and bric-a-brac. Donations can be dropped off at the front of the shop in normal business hours.

The shop is open week days 10am-4.30pm, and Saturday 9am- 12.30pm, apart from normal public holidays over Christmas and New Year.

This is a great opportunity to clean out your wardrobe to make room for those Christmas presents.

Regular branch meetings commence at 5pm in a member’s home, with the next meeting to be held on Monday, February 6 2017.

New volunteers are welcome and required across shop, emergency services and branch. Phone the shop for phone numbers and details.
