Drouin

Saturday’s main event was the grand finals of the 2016 match play championships.

The scratch section over 36 holes saw Mark Allen take on Ryan Hammond.

Allen’s play in the morning round was exceptional, holing his usual quota of long putts to take a two up lead over Hammond after 18 holes.

The winds became extremely strong in the afternoon, and so did Hammonds game, amassing five birdies with just one bogie to eventually overtake Allen and go on to win 3/2.

In the A grade handicap final, Shawn Coombs also played extremely well in the morning to lead Hammond one up going into lunch. However as was the case with the scratch final, Hammonds play in the afternoon proved too strong for Coombs, which eventually saw Hammond run away with a 5/4 victory.

The B grade final between Peter Devries and George Shand was a beauty, with the match going down to the final hole.

By both player’s admission, the golf wasn’t their finest, yet as a result it set up a thrilling contest which never saw any player take full control.

With DeVries wielding the broomstick putter (legally of course) he managed to edge out Shand one up on the last hole.

Ray Mooney took no prisoners in the C grade final against Colin Hunt with a dominant display of great golf. With Mooney receiving six shots, this proved too tall of a task for Hunt, and with Mooney’s fine play, he went on to win 6/5.

The club thanked Simon Appleby and the Drouin Family Hotel for sponsoring the event.

For everyone else, they were playing a single person par event. Ninety-five players faced some tough conditions, especially for the afternoon players when the winds reached gale force.

A grade was won by Damien Bibby, who funnily enough played in the afternoon in the tougher conditions.

Fortunately for Bibby, he spends a lot of the time hitting the ball along the ground, so the wind doesn’t affect him as much as others.

His score of +5 off a 12 handicap was an excellent score.

In B grade, another fantastic score was shot by Gary Burns with +5 off his 17 handicap.

Burns has been putting in a mountain of practice over the last few weeks, so it’s good to see it paying off.

C grade went to new member Shane Davidson. Davidson shot a fine score of +3 off his 23 handicap. Good to see a fresh face in the club doing so well.

You needed +1 to get a ball down the line: Lea Caldwell +4, David Low, +4, Paul Lunt +3, Richard Ford +2, Scott Blaney +2, Graham Moon +2, Mike Waring +2, Jim Bransgrove +1 and Reg Dixon +1.

NTP 5th Lea Caldwell, 8th Leigh Gordan, 10th Jim Bransgrove, 14th Steve Bethune.

On Wednesday, 96 players contested a stableford event under sunny skies.

A grade was won by big hitting Shane Pallant, who took the day off work and shot a fine 37 points off his five handicap.

B grade went to Jock Granger, who has been getting out and working on his game often of late. The hard work paid off with a great score of 43 points off his 19 handicap.

In the C grade section, Jim Gregory obviously avoided the bunkers on his way to scoring a brilliant 44 points off his 24 handicap.

DTL Roger Barnes 42, Norm Mills 42, David Grafton 42, Graham Rawson 42, Jim Dafoe 41, Graham Austin 40, Noel Brereton 40, Chris Grainger 39, Richard Ford 39 and Bill McGinness with 38 on a countback.

NTP 5th Bob Ramage, 8th Shane Pallant, 10th Roger Matheson, 14th Damien Bibby.

Next Saturday will be a stableford event on Christmas eve.

Boxing Day is race day. The clubhouse will be open for your enjoyment with meals, drinks, TAB facilities, and a $50,000 dollar hole in one opportunity for all to participate in.

It promises to be a great day. Book with the club on 5625 1300.

Everyone at the Drouin Country Club wishes all a safe and happy Christmas.

Be sure to get your friends and family out over the holidays to enjoy the great course and clubhouse facilities.

Garfield

This week’s major event was the traditional Family Day four ball aggregate event, with a field of 12 pairs doing battle which included various combinations of parents and siblings, husbands and wives and brothers.

Taking out victory was the husband and wife pairing of Tolly and Melissa Baharis with a score of 73 stable ford points, just the point clear of Geoff and Rex Turner.

A further point away in third place was Rod Norton playing with his daughter Amanda McLure.

For everyone else it was a game of single stableford with a huge field of some 91 players presenting to the starter.

Best in for the major grade was Peter McNeish with a score of 40 points playing off his handicap of just seven, one clear of Joe Tonso who took the B grade honors playing off his handicap of 18.

Eric Harvie found that winning feeling again to break a long run of outs with a very nice 42 points to win the C grade event.

A score of 38 points or better was required to win a ball down the line.

Bill Purdom had a day out by scoring a hole in one on the par three fourth hole to add to his score of 38 points. Purdom was awarded eight balls for his effort.

A field of 63 faced the starter on Thursday for the regular mid-week competition of single stableford with three golfers all scoring a very nice 42 points.

Pieter Van Der Horst took out the A grade event while Matt Ross claimed victory in B grade.

Peter King can only console himself to a ball down the line, after throwing away almost certain victory by finishing with just the three points over the last three holes.

A score of 38 points was needed to get a ball down the line.

The club is saddened to report that Ray Johnson has had a serious health turn. All Garfield members and Ray’s many friends wish him a speedy recovery.

Carl Gilbert won that evening’s twilight event with a score of 22 stable ford points from a field of 27 players.

Next Saturday is an American foursome’s event, with a game of stableford being scheduled for Monday which is the Boxing Day holiday.
