Under 14s runners up at Country Week

-

Warragul District Cricket Association’s under 14 team finished runners up in Junior Country Week played in South Gippsland last week.

Hosts Leongatha and District proved far too strong, taking all before them to win all five games. The Wild Dogs recorded three wins from five matches to finish second on aggregate ahead of Bairnsdale, who recorded three wins from their four matches.

The bowling and fielding was top class for the whole five days, with nine run outs for the week a highlight.

Liam McDonald was joint winner of the bowling award with eight wickets, seeing him named in the All Gippsland team along with Aaron Blanch.

The Association thanked team manager Jim Sandman, Tania Serong for arranging meals and Michael Masterson for his efforts to get the team to the carnival.

The Association also thanked volunteers Michael Caddy, Michael Stephens and Tex Notman while also acknowledging InverlochKongwak Football Club for their hospitality.

Meanwhile, the under 15 team endured a tough campaign, recording one win to finish at the bottom of the table.

Round 1 v Traralgon Following a delayed start at Korumburra owing to inclement weather, Warragul District Cricket Association won the toss and elected to bowl.

Early wickets made it difficult for Traralgon.

Liam Murphy was the pick of the bowling early with two wickets. Harry Moore supported him with two wickets and Zac Wright also had two wickets through the middle overs.

Patty Mulqueen came back for a second spell and finished with 3/14.

Traralgon were bowled out in 39 overs for 69 which did not look to be nearly enough.

The WDCA innings started badly, losing openers Bailey Osseweyer and Will Gown out within first three overs.

The innings was steadied by Patty Mulqueen (13) and Heath Darcy (20).

At 3/35 WDCA lost Patty and then wickets fell at regular intervals until Tynan North (15 not out) arrived at the crease with score at 7/50.

At 8/61 WDCA battled hard to get to the target, to eventually be all out for 85.
