Snake alert

-

Snakes are out-and-about, and not just in rural areas.

A red bellied black snake was found at a residential property in Contingent St, Trafalgar last week.

Hiding among a pile of bricks, the snake startled the residents when they were working outside. They kept a close eye on their friend until the snake catcher attended.

The news sparked many reports on The Gazette’s Facebook page of other snake sightings in residential areas.

Tash Blake reported seeing four snakes in the past three months, including three tiger snakes and a red bellied black. One of the tiger snakes was on her driveway.

Warragul resident Amanda Cox said she had a copper head snake in her backyard last week, first one she has seen in seven years. Her property backs onto the train line.

Torina Johnston has had four tiger snakes around her home at Hill End so far this year, last year they had nine.

Sarah Bailey warned residents that it was “tiger snake sighting territory” in the reserve at the end of Grange Cres.

Baw Baw Shire also has been advised of increased snake activity in recent weeks, as warmer weather encouraged them to come out of hibernation.

Council encourages all residents to maintain clean and tidy properties by mowing their lawns and removing piles of rocks, timber or building materials that encourage snakes.
