BACK TO SCHOOL
Our local Bellfield Speech Pathology is running innovative group programs for students of all ages, as well as workshops for parents, with ‘back to school’ and ‘school readiness’ skills in mind. Whilst working with students to support their development and growth in the classroom, the Speech Pathologists are also providing information sessions for parents on how to support the early reader at home.
The group sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for students to target their language and literacy goals in an environment that better resembles a classroom. Students are taught to recognise their own learning styles and are encouraged to become independent in developing strategies to support these. They develop their ability to attend for longer periods and learn how to ignore distractions in the classroom.
Following a complete language and literacy assessment the student’s suitability for groups is established and their goals are set for the term. Students are placed in small groups of between 4-6 children of similar age and ability. The weekly sessions spark a renewed interest in reading and writing as their confidence develops among new like-minded friends.
Evening workshops and information sessions are available for parents looking at supporting their child’s reading development at home. Eliza Galvin and Rhonda Campbell are the senior Speech Pathologists who have spent much of their careers working with school age students and their families. They will open your eyes to some new ideas on how best to support the reader at home and better understand why your child might be finding this new skill difficult.
