Championship finals

Warragul Bowling Club completed three championship events recently.

The men’s championship pairs final saw Paul Simmons and Terry Sullivan taking on David and Matt Smith.

The Smiths got one on the first two ends, before Paul and Terry won the next eight ends with six ones and two twos to lead 10/2.

The Smiths got one on the 11th end and, when David took out Terry’s shot bowl, picked up a rare six. They got one on the next end and all of a sudden, scores were level.

Some brilliant bowls from Paul and Terry saw a five on the 14th, then David and Matt got two ones to trail by three with two ends to go.

Paul and Terry won the last two ends for a final score of 19/12. They were worthy winners of the final, while David and Matt were gallant in defeat. B grade singles The B grade singles final was played between Brian Kennedy and Mike Cousens - and what a great game it turned out to be.

The game lasted for 31 ends, with Mike coming out the winner 25/23.

It took until the 13th end before Brian found himself four shots up, the largest margin of the game. By the 16th end, Mike was back in front by two shots.

There were eight lead changes during the game. After 25 ends with the score at 19-all, Brian picked up three shots only to lose three on the next to see the score at 22-all.

Both players kept their nerve as they moved to 23-all. Mike got one on the next by removing Brian’s close toucher, Mike drew a resting toucher to hold game and held onto it despite Brian’s three close attempts to remove it.

There were some excellent bowls played by both. Brian was unlucky to lose but Mike thoroughly deserved his win. Mixed pairs The mixed pairs final was played last week between Bill Clappers and Marg Keeffe against Bob Taylor and Jean Kydd.

The game was quite even in the first half, basically going shot for shot.

However, Bill and Marg got on top in the second half with a few multiple shot ends to run out comfortable winners, 24/12.
