Mosaics given a modern twist
An eclectic range of mosaic art will be showcased at The Station Gallery, Yarragon during February and March.
The annual exhibition by the Baw Baw Arts Alliance mosaic group is aptly named “Nippers and Chippers” and will open tomorrow (Wednesday).
Some of the artists represented in the exhibition are Elisabeth Smoorenburg, Tini Cook, Barb Gogerly, Faye Rankin and Shirley Dean who are members of the Yarragon community. They are joined by former Yarragon resident Alene Bonser.
Others of this inspiring group travel from further afield to attend the weekly workshops in mosaics.
The mosaic group has worked on several themes over the past year; hot and cold, seasons, abstract, work inspired by an artist, portrait and one colour. These have enabled an exploration of visual elements, use of a wide range of unconventional materials and encouraged skill development.
The artwork on display is an excellent example of the development of artists who regularly critique each other’s work.
Don’t miss this inspiring exhibition that reinterprets the ancient genre of mosaics and gives it an exciting modern twist. “Nippers and Chippers” will run until April 2. Trafalgar Railway Station art spaces have recently been a hive of activity over the school holidays as members of the Baw Baw Arts Alliance presented a program of art activities designed by the National Gallery of Victoria.
Inspired by the gallery’s summer exhibitions, “John Olsen: The You Beaut Country” and “Atelier: Viktor and Rolf for Kids”, kids and families have created John Olsen-inspired drawings and paintings and designed their very own paper fashion accessories, stimulated by Viktor and Rolf couture fashion.
The workshops were led by local sculptor, Warragul Arts Market coordinator and primary school art teacher Jessie Maclennan and longtime textile teacher and newcomer to the area Prue Barridge.
