Solution needed for busy intersection

-

The amount of traffic is getting worse and drivers and pedestrians are at risk of injury, she said.

Howitt St (also referred to as South Rd) is the main southern entry and exit to Warragul from Princes Freeway and Korumburra Rd.

Burke St carries heavy traffic, particularly around school start and finish times, with Warragul Regional College, Warragul and District Specialist School, Marist Sion College and St Joseph’s primary school all located there.

Tracey Morris said it was bad when she began driving her daughter to school last year and things have only got worse.

She said it recently took her 20 minutes to drive from the Regional College to the Warragul CBD as traffic turning to and from Burke St choked while giving way to vehicles using Howitt St.

According to Ms Morris drivers are putting themselves and others in danger by taking risks to make turns.

The situation, she said, is compounded by the number of school buses using the roads (Warragul Bus Lines’ depot is also in Burke St not far from Howitt St).

There are also plans for a large commercial development on the south-west corner of the road junction that will add further traffic once completed.

Ms Morris said she doesn’t know the answer.

Only that one must be found before there are serious accidents.

She said she’d heard that traffic lights would be installed sometime next year – Baw Baw Shire told The Gazette last week there were no such plans – but is not sure how much they would help.

Travelling the opposite direction along Burke St from the school to cross to Princes Way at Colman St where there are traffic lights is also a major problem, Ms Morris claimed.

Long banks of traffic including buses at the intersection trying to turn into Colman St are further aggravated by being held up at the railway level crossing when trains pass.
