Garfield advance in finals

Garfield had a hard-fought win in its division five semi-final over Morwell on Saturday.

The division five team travelled to Yarragon with the result 75/52 after two wins and a loss.

Wes Goodman’s team started well, up 5/1 on the fifth. They only lost four ends before the break - three ends being singles. At the break, Garfield led 14/5. Garfield lost three ends from there and were never headed. It was a great win with all the team playing very well. Wes Goodman led his team to a 27/12 win.

Damian Brick’s team had a tight game early. Scores were level three times but Garfield went into the break leading at 13/9. The team was helped by Bob Hope’s good leading at 94-years-young. However, Morwell fought back to be within a shot on the 17th. Garfield drew away again, losing only two more ends for a great eight-shot win. The final score was 25/17. Well played by all the team.

Bob Lamport’s team was down early but drew level on the ninth at six-all. Helped by some good bowls from Rod Hackett and Gary Helemore giving the team a good start, Garfield lost a four on the 10th but came back to only be down 9/11 on the 13th. They won seven of the next nine ends to be up 22/14 on the 22nd. Morwell finished strong to be down by a shot on the 24th. Garfield, on the last, held the shot but Morwell’s skip L. Gurney put in a great bowl to get the win. Garfield lost 22/23. Results: Wes Goodman (skip), Gordon Moxey, Cliff Stephens and Frank Prins won 27/12. Damian Brick (skip), Adrian Helmuth, Jill Rouse and Bob Hope won 25/17. Bob Lamport (skip), Don Knight, Gary Helemore and Rod Hackett lost 22/23.

Garfield will now play Morwell Club at Yarragon on Saturday in the division five preliminar­y final.
