Longwarry into grand final

A large crowd of local supporters watched Longwarry Bowls Club’s division three team make their way through to the WGBD grand final after a 24-shot defeat of top team Traralgon at Drouin on Saturday.

Longwarry 18/109 defeated Traralgon 2/85.

Glenn Pask, Elio Meggetto, Kenneth Towt and Barry White (skip) defeated M. Cumming’s team 27/17.

Longwarry got off to a slow start, losing the first two ends. They won the next eight ends to take a seven-shot lead into the break. After tea, Longwarry picked up seven shots on end 16. Traralgon picked up but Longwarry were too strong to win by 10 shots in a great team effort.

Ian Peterson, Grant Pask, Brian Hennessey and Slim Eastwell (skip) lost to D. Cooper’s team 16/31.

Traralgon who got off to a good start and were bowling well. They went into the tea break leading by 15 shots. Longwarry came out and kept the same margin for the rest of the game. Traralgon was the better team on the day with Longwarry going down by 15 shots.

Simon Counsel, Judy Eastwell, Gerald Mitchell and Hank Metselaar (skip) defeated R. Davey’s team 30/20.

It was an even game in the first half, with several lead changes. Longwarry, led by skipper Hank, came out and won 10 of the last 12 ends to record a great 10-shot win. Player of the rink was Hank Metselaar in a good team win.

Mark Serong, Lloyd Maisey, Ken White and Russell White (skip) defeated H. Dehommel’s team 36/17.

Longwarry got off to a flyer, winning 11 of the first 12 ends and taking a 19shot lead into tea. The last half of the game was even. However, Longwarry had done the damage and recorded a 19-shot win to be the king rink for the day. Player of the rink was skip Russell White in another great team effort.

Longwarry’s division three team now has a week to rest up before playing the winner of Traralgon and Traralgon RSL in the grand final on Saturday, March 4.

After its own week off, Longwarry’s division six team will play Trafalgar at Yallourn in the preliminar­y final on Saturday. In the midweek pennant competitio­n, Longwarry’s division four team will play Traralgon at Yallourn today (Tuesday).
