-

A $1 million tender has been awarded for the construction of a second oval in the Western Park sports precinct.

Baw Baw Shire last week signed off on the tender for $1.014 million that was awarded to Depan Group Pty Ltd.

Works are expected to commence within weeks on the new oval, which will be constructed in Tarwin St, opposite existing facilities at Western Park.

The oval works are expected to be completed by November

Acting community assets director David Dunstan said the works construction of the new AFL/cricket oval included a new turf wicket bench comprising four turf pitches and one synthetic wicket; AFL standard goal posts and netting, boundary fence; and some seating or spectator viewing area.

A dual purpose electronic scoreboard will cater for both football and cricket.

The project also includes ball stop netting system between the existing and proposed wetlands and the new oval as well as between Tarwin Street and the new oval

Oval irrigation and subsurface drainage system works also will be undertaken.

A project reference group consisting of a range of community sporting user groups has been involved in consultation and development of the project plans and designs.

In addition to the current tendered scope of works, Mr Dunstan said additional works have been planned as part of the total project budget, including floodlighting to 100lux and security/way finding lights; 2.5m wide shared path along the periphery of the oval leading to the crossing point on Tarwin St; two coach/player boxes; and a shelter including a toilet and sports equipment storage space

These additional works will be undertaken after the completion of the oval with the whole project expected to be completed by June 2018.

The project is being funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria in partnership with Baw Baw Shire Council.
