Drouin

Drouin Golf Club had 125 players teeing it up on Saturday for the first round of the 2017 men’s club championsh­ips.

Even with the greens rolling a little faster, and the course playing at its full length, there was still many great scores shot over the day. As a result, there were some very tight scoring at the top of the leader boards in each grade.

A grade: Shane Pallant 70, Mark Allen 70, Lachie Bambridge 71, Ryan Hammond 71, Mike Santo 73.

B grade: Jason Brain 80, John Piner 81, Glenn Flowers 84, Tony Piner 85, Phil Dignam 85.

C grade: George Shand 87, Graeme Alexander 88, Eric Robbins 89, Warrren Cook 90.

D grade: Jack Jarred 93, Geoff Closter 95, Ian Hemphill 96, Mike Waring 97, Gary Florence 97.

In the daily event, which also happened to be the March monthly medal, Lachie Bambridge birdied the last four holes to edge out Shane Pallant on a countback with a 67 nett. Impressive effort for a 15-yearold.

B grade saw George Shand shoot a very solid 70 nett off his 17 handicap to take the honours.

Ian Hemphill played consistent­ly all day, which enabled him to shoot a fine 69 nett to take out C grade.

The women played a stableford event and the winner was Faye Downward with 36 points.

On Wednesday, 75 players contested the March mid-week medal.

The winner was Colin Zeeno, who shot a great 76 off the stick to have 63 nett to take out the medal, and A grade on the day.

Ray Haley continued his solid form by shooting a brilliant 66 nett off a 19 handicap to win B grade.

Centenary Park golf course visitor Jim Hanlon must have found Drouin to his liking, scoring an impressive 63 nett to easily take out C grade.

Women

Drouin women played their first round of the Club Championsh­ips last week.

The champions in each division will be decided after the three stroke rounds are tallied. There was a nine-hole competitio­n, and Marion Devlin had 17 pts.

The previous Saturday saw Helen Moon and Glenda Warren have a win.

Today is the second round of the Club Championsh­ips, running concurrent­ly with the Edna Crowley Trophy for the best nett score after the three rounds. It will also be the March monthly medal.

The Drougal Cup will be played on March 15. Women are reminded to put their name down if they are available to play.

Seniors

It was another nice morning for the seniors nine-hole event last Thursday.

The winner in the women’s division was Chris Knight with 19 points.

The runner up was Marg Cox with 18 points, followed by Fay Downward, Marion Devlin, Pat Alexander and Catriona Ferguson with 17 points, Dagmar Forbes with 16 points, and Helen Andreasen and Julie Kidd with 14 points.

In the men’s division the winner was Ray Fish with 18 points.

The runners up were Rod Richie and Peter Downward with 16 points, followed by Jock Granger, Con Norris, Kevin O’Brien, Phil Edwards, Ian Hemphill, Richie Thomas, Tex Devlin and Graeme Alexander all with 15 points.

Garfield

It was a huge week of highlights at Garfield this week, including a new course record being set.

There was a 58 and a 59 scored, as well as the three eagles being scored.

Gus McKillop smashed through the glass ceiling that was the joint course record with a scintillat­ing 64, even with a bogey being scored on the last hole. He also had the four birdies and an eagle.

McKillop’s net 63 was good enough to claim victory for the A grade event.

Tolly Baharis took out monthly medal honors with a brilliant net 58, the two shots clear of Ken Sumsion who won the C grade event.

Other good scores in were shot by Shane Male with a net 65 , playing off his mark of just five and Peter Scott, who claimed the two birdies in his score of net 63.

A total of 31 out of the huge field of 107 were able to play to their handicap or better. A score of 66 or better was required to get a ball down the line.

Last Saturday week saw the running of the 2017 Top Gun event, which was contested by a field of 19 players.

Charlie Barnes claimed the victory from the other prize winners being Tolly Baharis, Trevor Langmaid, Craig Hunter, Lou Artico and Andrew Patton.

Deirdre Pilkington won the women’s Top Gun from Gail Franklin and Amanda McLure.

All contestant­s thanked the sponsor of this major club event.

There were the three eagles scored on Saturday, being the 10th hole by Gus McKillop, the first by Greg Macklin and the 13th by Greg Needham, which were all par five holes. Each of the three gentlemen were awarded the two balls each for their efforts.

The club congratula­ted Stephen Dolan, who scored his first ever win during Sunday’s pennant competitio­n.

All members are advised that entry forms for the club’s annual tournament, which commences on April 5, are now available from the club or can be downloaded from the club’s website.

The member’s program handbook for season 2017 is also now available at the club.

Mid-week saw the playing of the annual Rotary Club day with a field of 36 pairs getting out in a lovely warm autumn day for the 4BBB stableford event.

The A grade winners on a count back of 46 points were Kevin Whitmore and Peter Johnson from Noel Welsh and Keith Williamson.

The winners of the B grade event with a huge score of 52 points were the pairing of Evan Williams and Shaun Dolan. Runners up with a score of 49 points were Clinton Smith and John Preston.

Smith also took out the major raffle prize, which was a new golf buggy.

A field of some 46 players had a round on Thursday with a magnificen­t 75 off the stick being shot by John Scale.

Playing off his handicap of 16, it gave him a net 59 which equated to a huge 46 points.

Barrie Cousin won the B grade event with a score of 42 points playing off his mark of 26.

Exactly half the field was able to play to their handicap or better. A score of 40 to a count back was required to win a ball down the line. WGWG

Opening day for Women’s Golf West Gippsland was held at Mirboo North recently.

Twenty-nine pairs participat­ed in the 4BBB event, which was played in warm and sunny conditions.

The A grade winners were Merryn Dear (Churchill/Monash) and Annie Chapman (Traralgon) 45 points.

The Churchill/Monash women continued to dominate the field with the winners of B grade, Maureen McConville and Jan Blizzard (48 points), also coming from that club.

The winners of the nine holes out, from Churchill/Monash again, were Shirley Turner and Dot Stait with 23 points.

The winners of the nine holes In were Lola Carter and Betsy Brown (Yallourn) with 22 points on a count back.

Life member June Woznica (Moe) continued to show her style with nearest the pin on both the 6th and 16th holes. Other NTP winners were Sue Traill (Mirboo North) on the 4th and Kerri Ahearn (Warragul) on the 13th.
