Dairy waste dumped
Residents in rural areas around Drouin have been disgusted at recent illegal dumping of waste materials on roadsides.
Last week residents complained to Baw Baw Shire after four 100 litre drums were dumped in Waltons Rd.
Residents reported the drums appeared to contain dairy product waste, which raised concerns about odours and contamination spilling into nearby drains.
A week earlier two drums containing similar materials were dumped in Higgs Rd.
Shire acting community assets director David Dunstan said local residents contacted council and immediate action was taken to investigate and resolve the issue.
“The contents of the illegally dumped waste drums were initially unknown and removal was delayed while council investigated the contents of the drums.
“After taking the necessary precautions, it was confirmed that the waste was dairy matter. Council’s public health team also carried out an inspection of the site and it was deemed not to be a risk to health.
The illegally dumped waste was removed by council officers.
Mr Dunstan said council staff exhausted all leads in relation to finding who was responsible for the illegal dumping.
“Council officers undertook due diligence in handling the matter the most safe, responsible and cost effective way resulting in a longer than normal response time,” he said.
Mr Dunstan encouraged community members who may have information about who is responsible for the illegal dumping to come forward so council can further investigate the issue.
