White takes out title
After being absent for almost three years from the Warragul District Amateur Basketball Association squad program the U/10 girls program was kickstarted several weeks ago when experienced coach, Aaron Bryce, was approached and agreed to take the helm.
Following rigorous tryouts 20 girls ranging in age at the time from 7-8 years of age were selected and began an intense program aiming to quickly overcome a 1-2 year head start that other associations have had.
After less than five weeks training they entered two teams in their first local tournament which just happened to be in Warragul. This tournament understandably proved a major challenge and learning curve for all players.
“As you can imagine the girls, and most of the parents, had no idea what to expect or what the skill level and intensity is at squad level." ch Aaron explained.
“With most other regional squad teams had players who have been in the program and playing in tournaments for almost two years so realistically we were just happy to get some experience and be competitive so it wasn't a surprise when we only won 1 game between both teams all weekend."
"Despite having no expectations it was still disheartening for them but at least they got a taste for what the standard was like and came away with the determination to improve and do better next time" And that is exactly what they did!. With less than five weeks the little Warriors turned things around and this time entered two even teams in the Traralgon Labour Day Weekend Tournament's U/10B competition".
This time they came away with the ultimate prize after the "White" team won every game they played by 10 points or more eventually beating Churchill in the grand final 18-8.
Amazingly the other team also finished in the top half of their draw also, winning four of their seven games (just losing one of them to their "sister" team).
The two teams won a combined 12 of 15 games.
“All coaches love to win, and I am no different, and I know the girls are the same. But from my point of view at this age it is about having fun, making friendships, developing and learning new skills that prepare them for life's journey (which includes losing)."
“I often say to my players "sometimes you learn more from losing then you do winning" and I believe this is true."
“I am so proud of the way the girls approached every game and responded positively after the losses in their first tournament instead of giving up.
“Their determination and endeavor couldn't be questioned. They defended extremely hard and I can honestly say that each and every player has improved since the last tournament"
“I never dreamed they would turn things around as quickly as they have. It's a real credit to their determination and just goes to show that if you put in the work you can turn things around quickly. Even as a 7 or 8 year old"
Other great results from last weekend's tournament included a grand final thriller for coach Paul Potter's U/12B girls who went down after a triple overtime game in a heartbreaking "golden point" loss to Churchill. Another amazing result considering they started the season with only eight players.
With the new domestic season commencing shortly anyone interested is invited to contact one of the local clubs or enquire through the Warragul District Amateur Basketball Association website or Facebook page.
