Bbaa artists at work

-

A wonderful opportunity to see artists at work, view finished works and ask questions all free of charge will be held monthly at Station Gallery, Yarragon.

Calligrapher Anita George of Baw Baw Arts Alliance (Bbaa) has developed the exciting new initiative – “Artists at Work”.

Members of Bbaa and the public can watch artist demonstrations on the last Sunday of each month from 1pm to 3pm.

Anita was the first “Artist at Work” in February followed by mosaic artist Viv Hordern on Sunday. Wood engraver Bob Hickman is next up on Sunday, April 30.

Each month a new artist will demonstrate their style of art. A wonderful line-up of artists is planned from traditional wood-carving and printing, to the modern paintings technique using an iPad.

The artists will have their work on “The Wall” at the gallery for viewers to watch and ask questions while the artists talk of materials, tools and techniques.

Artists normally work in isolation from the public who only see the finished artworks. How they create and achieve a final design is unknown to most.

This initiative is a great way to show the “how” of their art form.

Viv Hordern demonstrated the art of glass on glass mosaics. Viv has participated in several self-guided mosaic groups and is predominantly self-taught.

She runs classes in her own studio and has conducted several workshops for Bbaa.

The next artist at work – on Sunday, April 30 between 1pm and 3pm – will be Bob Hickman

Bob will demonstrate wood engraving and wood block printing.

Wood engraving is a centuries old technique of engraving an image onto woods such as Lemonwood, Pear, Holly and Boxwood to produce an image with fine detail that can be reproduced multiple times.

This was often used as illustrations for books and magazines before the camera became a professional tool.

In addition, Baw Baw Arts Alliance’s Monday Painting Group “Brushstrokes” will hold an exhibition at Station Gallery during April.

Expect to see paintings of various sizes, different styles and a mix of framed acrylics, oils and mixed media.
