Rainbow of organic produce

-

Hundreds of vegetables, fruits and nuts made for an inspiring and head turning display for the Baw Baw Food Hub at this year’s Farm World.

A rainbow of colour showing the diversity of vegetables was portrayed in the display that caught people’s attention.

Thirty boxes of different vegetable, fruit and nut varieties were carefully placed to stage the display.

Food hub members moved into the exhibition centre at 6pm on the Friday night and had three hours to complete their display.

It took about an hour to build the structure and then a couple of hours to create the rainbow of colour.

BBFH co-ordinator Linda Hoare said they felt like they were working against the clock and then returned early Saturday morning for a few finishing touches.

Linda designed the display and was happy with the way her vision came together with the help of a lot of people.

She said everything developed quickly over the six week period, knowing they had to do a lot of pre-planning before the on site construction.

Lettuces were grown in pots so they wouldn’t wilt during the display and a call out was sent to growers for whatever they could provide.

Eighteen growers from medium commercial to backyard growers contributed produce.

“We wanted to showcase the incredible array of local organic produce we grow in this area.

“The principle of the food hub is to increase the diversity of local food production.

Linda said the display attracted some interest from new suppliers including an avocado grower and a home gardener with a one acre vegie patch.

She said they wanted to continue to expand their grower suppliers. The BBFH currently packs 150 boxes of vegetables each week and hopes this will increase to 200.
